## Short answer

Our Generative AI for Everyone review: it is the best free course for using chat assistants and large language models well at work. Andrew Ng covers what they can and cannot do, how to prompt them, and where they fit in a team, with no code. Coursera sells the certificate, and says some courses offer a free option without one.

## Key facts

- Instructor: Andrew Ng
- Time to complete: 6 hours
- Modules: 3, of 2 hours each
- Assignments: 6
- Prior knowledge: No prior knowledge of AI or coding skills required
- Optional lab: Trying generative AI code yourself, 60 minutes
- Languages: Taught in English, 28 languages available

## Who it is for

- Anyone who uses ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot at work and wants better results
- Managers deciding which tasks in their team a large language model should help with
- People who finished Elements of AI and want the generative AI chapter it does not have

## Who should skip it

- Developers who want to call a model from code: take ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers instead
- Anyone who wants to understand how transformers work inside: this course stays at the level of behaviour
- People who need a free certificate: Coursera sells the certificate, and a free Full Course, No Certificate option gives you no credential

## What you can do afterwards

- Write prompts that get reliable, checkable answers from a chat assistant
- Explain why large language models make things up, and how to catch it
- Sort the tasks in your job into ones a model helps with and ones it should not touch
- Describe the basic options for building on a model, such as retrieval and fine-tuning, without needing to build them
- Weigh the risks for your organisation, from data privacy to over-reliance

## What the course covers

### Introduction to generative AI

What large language models are, what is new about them and what they get wrong. Coursera lists this module at 2 hours.

### Generative AI projects

Prompting, retrieval and fine-tuning explained as choices, plus how to scope a project.

### Generative AI in business and society

Task-by-task use at work, plus risks, jobs and responsible use.

## What works

- Covers the tools people use now, which most no-code AI courses do not
- Practical prompting advice you can use the same day
- Andrew Ng's clear, calm teaching, with no hype
- Coursera offers a free trial and financial aid, so you can try it before paying

## What does not

- The certificate is paid and its price is only shown when you enrol, the same trade-off as AI For Everyone
- Explains how models behave, not how they work, so it will not satisfy the curious
- Video and quizzes only; you practise prompting on your own tools, not inside the course
- Generative AI moves fast, so some product examples date within a year

## The catch

The certificate is paid, and Coursera shows the price only when you enrol, so it varies by country. Coursera says some courses offer a free Full Course, No Certificate option, which gives you the materials and a grade but no certificate. The second catch is the pace of the field: the principles in the course last, but specific tool features it mentions may already have changed. Check anything product-specific against the tool itself.

## Is it still current?

The principles (what large language models are good and bad at, how to prompt, where they fit in a workflow) still hold. Named product features date fastest; we re-check this course more often than the others for that reason.

## Take before

Elements of AI

## Take after

- ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers
- AI For Everyone

## Verdict

Take Generative AI for Everyone once you use chat assistants at work and want to use them with judgement. It scores 7.8: up to date is 8 because it covers the tools people use now, clarity is 8, but depth is 5 because it explains how large language models behave rather than how they work, and truly free is 7 because the certificate is paid. Take it after Elements of AI, and alongside AI For Everyone if you plan projects.

## Questions people ask

### Can you take Generative AI for Everyone for free?

Possibly. Coursera says some courses offer a free Full Course, No Certificate option. Look for it when you enrol. If it is not offered, you can start a free trial or apply for financial aid.

### Does Generative AI for Everyone teach prompting?

Yes. Prompting is one of its main topics, with practical rules for clear instructions, giving examples and checking answers. It teaches prompting in a chat assistant, not from code.

### How long is Generative AI for Everyone?

Coursera lists it at 6 hours to complete, across 3 modules of 2 hours each. Its FAQ suggests 3 weeks at 1 to 2 hours a week. It has 6 assignments, and the first module alone has 10 videos and 3 readings. There is one optional hands-on lab of 60 minutes, called Trying generative AI code yourself. Andrew Ng teaches it in English, and Coursera says 28 languages are available.

### Is it still current given how fast LLMs change?

The principles are. What models do well and badly, and how to prompt them, has held up. Specific product features date faster, so treat those as examples rather than instructions.

### Do you need to code for Generative AI for Everyone?

No. There is no code in the course. If you later want to build with a model, ChatGPT Prompt Engineering for Developers is the next step and needs basic Python.

### Should I take AI For Everyone first?

You do not need to. They stand alone. Take Generative AI for Everyone first if you use chat assistants daily, and AI For Everyone first if you plan projects.
